Fragile

I love the horror genre, obviously. Gore's fine. Jump scares - whatever...but what I love more than anything is atmosphere. Preferably haunted. And a slow story that builds and relies on character development and location for its backbone and flesh. Subtly. Slow, creepy realizations that turn your blood a tad cooler. That to me is horror.

This evening I watched FRAGILE by writer/director Jaume Balagueró, who is best known for REC and REC 2. It wasn't a perfect film (Really, how many of those are there? You can probably count them on one hand), but I thoroughly enjoyed it. A story that took its time, characters that were imperfect, and an atmosphere right up my alley. I liked it. It's not for everyone, but it did nicely for this horror loving girl.

I have a family picture frame hanging in my living room that I’ve filled with pics of creepy dolls, mostly from films (half of them from the short films of the Brothers Quay). The still you’ve got of that doll there is in the frame.

It’s been a long, long time since I’ve stopped by here and for this absence, I apologize, but it’s comforting to see you’ve still got impeccable taste.

Happy haunting this autumn season - I think it's going to be something special - there's just something in the air - okay, maybe it's just that cinnamon field that's been burning near my home for two days - but there's definitely something in the air...

This is my first visit to your blog, and it was quite a pleasant one. I'm a huge horror fan as well. Of all the different genres in movies, I feel that the horror genre is the most disparaged and misunderstood. It is one of those situations in which people either really love it or hate it; very few ever seem to be in the middle. Anyway, keep up the good work, and I look forward to reading your blog in the future!

Love your blog. Very to the point, and concisely written. Mainly commenting, however, because while I have yet to see FRAGILE, I fully believe foreign horror is eons ahead of American horror right now. I'm a life-long devotee of the genre. The last American horror film I can think of off-hand that I would consider great is TRICK 'R TREAT. Otherwise, I've been most impacted by the French films INSIDE, and MARTYRS. I absolutely love REC and REC 2 (and can't wait for the prequel and sequel). LET THE RIGHT ONE IN, of course, is a classic and was the best movie of 2008, IMHO. Those 5 films are all-time keepers for me. And the trailers for the Finnish RARE EXPORTS (Santa Claus is real, and when dug up his icey tomb he's a feral maniac), and the Norwegian TROLL HUNTERS, damn...I'm more excited for those than anything stateside right now. I will make sure I see FRAGILE asap.

You are from TN too? Great! We live in West Tn. I have to travel alot to Nashville to Vanderbilt for Jacob's doctors. Our colors haven't changed much this year. We are in a terrible drought and the leaves are dying instead of turning. Usually it is just beautiful. It is very nice to meet you.

Awesome blog! Fragile looks like a winner. Thanks for turning me on to this movie I hadn't even heard about otherwise. Keep up the good work.

Hey! I've seen this!

And I've got a bit of a funny story to tell about it.

So I was sitting in bed one evening watching Fragile (I have a T.V. in my room), when my older sister came in. She is, for the record, NOT a fan of horror movies and gets scared easily. She decided to watch a little bit of it.

Early, we had bought some incredible chocolate chips, and my sister was really taken with them. So she came in eating chocolate chips out of her hand and watched some of the movie with me. About five minutes after she arrived, there was that jump scene where the freaky lady comes reeling towards the camera in a wheelchair. My sister screamed and ran out of the room.

A few minutes later, she comes back in with a very nervous look on her face. She tells me that there is "Sort of a brown patch on my jeans". I look down and see a small brown streak on her jeans. As I start to piece it together in my mind, she tells me to lift up my duvet. I do so, and a look of utter horror passes over my face as I see THE BROWN SMEAR RUNNING ACROSS MY BED WHERE SHE WAS SITTING.

Turns out she had dropped some chocolate chips in my bed while she was eating them. Then her body heat combined with my electric blanket had melted them, and then when she jolted in the scary scene, she smeared the half-melted chocolate chips all over my bed.

But as you can imagine, I had initially jumped to some particularly HORRIFYING conclusions before the brown smear was identified.

Sorry that this was so long, just wanted to share it with you.

P.S. Bean - Are you alive?
