It would be hard to say which scared me more--or which I love more--the novel or the film. I say "the" film because I refuse to acknowledge the remake, no matter HOW many people who are (a) smarter, (b) better informed, (c) cuter, (d) healthier, or (e) less neurotic than I say my narrow-mindedness is likely to lead me down a very sad path. "But who knows what's just behind the tree?" I ask. Then, when they turn around, I smack them with a baseball bat I keep in my back pocket for just such occasions. Apparently being smart, well informed, cute, healthy, and free of neuroses ain't all it's cracked up to be.
